Using SBS4DCC Light Kits with DC Power
I am frequently asked if our kits will work with traditional DC power sources. 

The short answer is, Yes!

The DCC models will work on DC power but the lights will vary in brightness depending on the voltage supplied to the rail.

We are now offering a DC option for all of our DCC-Friendly kits that maintains constant light intensity through the entire throttle range.  The boards will light initially at 1.5V and maintain constant brightness through the entire throttle range.

To order the DC option, simply select the DCC-Friendly model that fits your application and choose the DC Power Option before adding the item to your shopping cart.

Be sure to check out our DC LED Power Supply too! 

This is a DC compatible version of our popular DCC LED Power Supply that can be used for constant brightness and non-directional lighting projects.  Best of all, they will work with traditional 1.5v grain of wheat bulbs too, if that's how you roll.  

They are the perfect solution for powering Tomar Industries Marker Lights, Drumheads and similar lighting projects.
  

About Control Source Options

Our feature rich design means each board is highly configurable.  

One of the most important features is the multiple choices available for controlling the lighting.  The control type determines the compatability of the power source and whether the lights can be turned on and off.

Generally, you can only choose one type of control.

DCC-Friendly with Magnetic On/Off Switch - DC or DCC power source, magnetic switch for on/off control


DCC Decoder Ready - DC or DCC power source, requires DCC decoder for on/off control, decoder sold separately and installed by customer


DCC Decoder Installed - DC or DCC power source, requires DCC decoder for on/off control, decoder sold separately and installed by SBS4DCC


DC Power Option - DC or DCC power source, no on/off control


Note - When choosing the DCC Decoder Ready option, the board has a set of through holes for attaching a hardwired decoder.  One decoder function is required to control the interior lights.  There are through holes for connecting up to three additional functions.  These through holes are connected to solder pads conveniently located at each end of the board to allow easy connection of "off-board" lighting features such as marker lights, drum heads, end-of-train lights, and such.

The kits ship with a dimming resistor already installed.  The brightness can be adjusted to taste using the on-board adjustment on most models.

 

Be sure to see the videos below to see just how cool these light kits really are.  Oh, and just for reference, the car crosses a series of Atlas un-powered plastic-frogged switches to demonstrate how well the anti-flicker performance really is.

 

Prices start at $11 for N-scale and $15 for HO-scale.  Not too shabby for all of these features and this kind of performance.

 Installation Instructions

Installation of the SBS4DCC Light Kit is a breeze!

Simply connect Track Power to the board at either end at the point labeled with a " ~ " symbol.  Just be sure to make the left and right rail connections on the respective sides of the board.  Finally, secure the board to the roof of the car using glue or tape.

If you are using the DCC Decoder power source option, simply connect the red, black, and blue wires at the points labeled RED, BLK and BLU.  Then connect at least one function wire to the point labeled F1.

There are additional connection points for the other functions.  The points are connected to solder pads that are conveniently located at the end of the board for use with marker lights, drum heads or other end-of-car / end-of-train lighting.  These connection points are labeled F2, F3, and F4 respectively.

After testing the installation, adjust the brightness of the lights to the desired level using the on-board potentiometer.

Note: You cannot combine control source options. You must remove the bridge rectifier and voltage regulator before installing a DCC Decoder on any board when so equipped.  Call or email for additional instructions.
